Printer resolution refers to the maximum number of dots a printer can produce per inch in both the horizontal and vertical directions during output; it is typically expressed in "dots per inch" (dpi). When printer resolution is discussed, it generally refers to the device's maximum resolution. Dye-sublimation printers typically offer a resolution of around 300 × 300 dpi. Due to their specific technical characteristics, these printers-despite having lower resolution than inkjet printers when printing images of the same size-produce continuous-tone output that rivals high-end inkjet photo printers; smooth, natural color transitions are a hallmark of their print quality. Precisely because of this characteristic, however, dye-sublimation printers are not well-suited for printing text or tables. Print time is not a parameter unique to dye-sublimation printers; the speed of laser and inkjet printers is usually measured by the number of pages output per minute, expressed in PPM (Pages Per Minute).
